Liposuction Q & A
What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes fat from your body by vacuuming unwanted fat deposits. Dr. Avila may recommend liposuction if you want to slim or reshape specific areas of your body and improve your body contours.
He can perform liposuction on your:
- Thighs and inner knees
- Back, hips, and buttocks
- Abdomen and waist
- Upper arms and chest
- Calves and ankles
- Cheeks, chin, and neck
It’s important to know that liposuction is a fat removal procedure, not a weight loss treatment. It doesn’t replace a healthy diet and regular exercise.
What happens during liposuction?
Your liposuction procedure begins with the administration of either a local or general anesthetic.
Dr. Avila then makes a small incision and flushes the area with a liquid anesthetic to reduce bleeding. He inserts a thin tube called a cannula through the incision and uses it to break up your fatty tissue. Using either a syringe at the end of the cannula or a vacuum device, Dr. Avila sucks the troublesome fat from your treatment area.
He may address multiple areas during one surgical procedure, depending on your needs. Once completed, he closes your incisions with sutures or medical glue.
What is recovery like after liposuction?
After your liposuction procedure, Dr. Avila wraps your treatment area in a bandage or compression garment. That reduces swelling and bruising and compresses your skin against your body where fat was removed. In some cases, he may advise you to compress your treatment area for 1-2 months.
You might have drains at your incisions to help reduce fluid buildup. Dr. Avila may also give you antibiotics to prevent infection. He sends you home with specific instructions on cleaning and caring for your incisions.
In most cases, you begin to feel better within a week and can return to normal activities after two weeks. Even so, it can take months for your body to heal from liposuction and your full results to emerge.
